Located on the West Campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, The Gardens at Texas A&M University serve as a vibrant outdoor classroom and community green space. Spanning approximately 27 acres, the gardens were created to promote education, research, and environmental stewardship. The first phase, known as the Leach Teaching Gardens, opened to the public in 2018. Since then, the area has grown into a well-loved part of the university and the surrounding community, offering a balance of scientific learning and natural beauty.
A Living Laboratory
The Gardens function as a living laboratory for students, researchers, and visitors. They provide hands-on opportunities to study horticulture, landscape design, plant science, and sustainability practices. University courses and student projects often make use of the gardens, allowing participants to work directly with Texas native plants and learn real-world applications of environmental design and management. The site also demonstrates innovative irrigation systems and sustainable landscaping techniques suited to the Texas climate.
Beauty Rooted in Education
In addition to its academic purpose, The Gardens offer an inviting environment for the public to enjoy. The landscape includes themed sections such as the Butterfly Garden, Vegetable Garden, Water Garden, and Texas Superstar Garden, each designed to highlight specific plant varieties or growing methods. Walking paths, seating areas, and shaded spots encourage visitors to spend time outdoors while learning about plant diversity and conservation. Educational signage throughout the grounds provides context about plant care, local ecosystems, and sustainable gardening practices.
Community Engagement and Events
The Gardens host numerous workshops, events, and volunteer programs throughout the year. Activities include gardening classes, youth programs, seasonal festivals, and plant sales that bring together students, faculty, and residents from across Texas. The gardens’ mission emphasizes outreach, encouraging visitors of all ages to connect with the environment and understand the importance of responsible horticulture.
Open to the Public
Admission to The Gardens is free, and the grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. The site offers a peaceful retreat within College Station, where visitors can walk, relax, or attend educational programs. Its design reflects both the agricultural heritage of Texas A&M University and a forward-looking approach to environmental education and sustainability.
