Stephen F. Austin State Park sits along the Brazos River near the town of San Felipe in Austin County, Texas. The land was donated to the state in 1940 by the San Felipe de Austin Corporation, and the park opened to the public in the same year. Its size is recorded at approximately 663 acres.

Historical Significance

The park is named for Stephen F. Austin, who played a central role in bringing Anglo-American settlers to Texas under a contract with the Mexican government in the early 1820s. Nearby San Felipe de Austin served as the administrative center of the Austin Colony from the mid-1820s until 1836. It was the location of significant political meetings that influenced the movement toward Texas independence. Although little of the original town remains, the area continues to carry strong historical importance.

The park features both bottomland and upland environments. The river bottoms contain riparian vegetation such as cottonwoods and hackberries, while the higher ground supports hardwood forests and pecan groves.
