The Austin Astronomical Society (AAS) is a nonprofit organization based in Austin, Texas, dedicated to promoting astronomy and space science education. Founded in 1969, the AAS provides opportunities for both amateur and professional astronomers to share their passion for the night sky. Through its outreach programs, meetings, and observing sessions, the society encourages people of all ages to take part in learning about astronomy.
Education and Community Outreach
Public outreach is one of the society’s primary goals. The AAS regularly organizes star parties and observing nights at various locations in Central Texas, including state parks and schools. These events invite the public to look through powerful telescopes, ask questions, and learn more about celestial objects. The society’s members also visit schools and community organizations to promote interest in science and inspire future astronomers.
The Eagle Eye Observatory
One of the highlights of the AAS’s efforts is its partnership in operating the Eagle Eye Observatory near Burnet, Texas, at Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park and Resort. This observatory serves as a premier viewing site under Central Texas’s dark skies. It features advanced telescopes, including a 16-inch Ealing “Educator” Cassegrain telescope and a 12.5-inch reflector. The site offers public viewing sessions and private programs, giving visitors a chance to experience the planets, moon, and deep-sky objects with exceptional clarity.
Supporting Astronomy in Central Texas
Beyond observing sessions, the Austin Astronomical Society supports members with workshops, lectures, and training programs on topics such as telescope use, astrophotography, and celestial navigation. The organization’s mix of public education and member support has made it an important part of the Central Texas science community. Its events, held throughout the year, bring together families, educators, and space enthusiasts who share a fascination with the universe.
