Seawolf Park sits on Pelican Island, just across the harbor from downtown Galveston. The park blends outdoor recreation with naval history, offering visitors a chance to experience two preserved World War II vessels up close. It serves as both a memorial and a family-friendly destination, drawing history enthusiasts, anglers, and sightseers to its scenic waterfront.
A Tribute to the USS Seawolf
The park is named in honor of the USS Seawolf (SS-197), a U.S. Navy submarine that was lost during World War II in 1944. Although the vessel itself is not located at the site, Seawolf Park stands as a memorial to the submarine and its 83 crew members who never returned. The name reflects the park’s connection to naval heritage and its role in commemorating the sacrifices made at sea.
The USS Cavalla and USS Stewart
Two historic naval vessels serve as the park’s centerpiece. The USS Cavalla (SS-244) is a Gato-class submarine launched in 1943 that gained fame for sinking the Japanese aircraft carrier Shōkaku during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. It was transferred to Galveston in 1971 and now serves as a museum ship. Alongside it is the USS Stewart (DE-238), an Edsall-class destroyer escort commissioned in 1943. The Stewart was brought to the site in 1974 and is one of only two remaining destroyer escorts in the United States. Together, these ships form the core of what is now known as the Galveston Naval Museum, located within Seawolf Park.
Recreation and Fishing
Beyond its naval exhibits, Seawolf Park is one of Galveston’s most popular fishing destinations. It features a long pier, open grassy areas, and bulkhead access along the water, offering anglers ample space to fish for species like speckled trout, flounder, and redfish. The park also includes picnic shelters, a playground, and open areas ideal for relaxing by the bay. Its location on Pelican Island provides panoramic views of Galveston Harbor and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, making it a favored spot for both leisure and sightseeing.
Historical and Educational Value
Seawolf Park combines elements of history, education, and outdoor enjoyment in one location. Visitors can tour the interior of the USS Cavalla and USS Stewart to see how sailors lived and worked during wartime. Educational programs, memorial plaques, and displays throughout the site highlight naval operations and commemorate those who served. Over the years, the park has become an important site for honoring U.S. maritime history and for providing hands-on learning experiences about World War II naval life.
