Pilares is a ghost town in northwest Presidio County, Texas, located along the Rio Grande near the community of Porvenir. The site lies on the southern edge of the Sierra Vieja Mountains, about 1.25 miles south of the confluence of Quinn Creek and the Rio Grande and roughly 1.5 miles north of Porvenir.
Historical Background
The area gained significance in the late eighteenth century with the establishment of a Spanish frontier fortification known as the Presidio de Pilares, also called El Príncipe. Founded around 1774, this presidio was part of Spain’s broader effort to secure settlements and missions in the region from raids by Plains tribes. Its placement along the Rio Grande allowed the Spanish to monitor movement through the borderlands and provided a defensible position near the river crossings.
Although the presidio was an important outpost during the Spanish colonial period, the surrounding village of Pilares remained small. Like many frontier settlements, it relied on proximity to the river for access to water, farming, and travel.
Geographic Features
Pilares’s location gave it views over the Rio Grande into northern Mexico and across stretches of the Chihuahuan Desert. The rugged landscape of the Sierra Vieja to the north and the river valley to the south framed the site, making it both strategic and scenic.
Present-Day Status
Today, Pilares is uninhabited and classified as a ghost town. The settlement no longer has a permanent population, and there are no functioning buildings or active community life at the site. What remains are traces of its past—references in historical records to the presidio and the village, which once played a small role in the Spanish defense network of the borderlands.
