The Pecan Bayou Paddling Trail near Brownwood, Texas was designated as the 63rd official Texas Paddling Trail in 2015. It provides a relaxed paddling route on the slow-moving waters of the Pecan Bayou. Launching from Fabis Primitive Park (and optionally from Riverside Park), paddlers have the choice of a 3.2-mile upriver loop or a 4-mile downriver loop to the dam and return. Typical float times fall in the 1–3 hour range, depending on water level, wind and flow. The bayou flows through a mature pecan orchard more than 100 years old, offering scenic calm waters and an easygoing experience.
Water Conditions and Route Details
This stretch of the Pecan Bayou is characteristically slow-moving, which makes it accessible for paddlers of varying experience levels. Because the bayou is influenced by overflow from Lake Brownwood and rainfall, it can experience higher flows or reduced water quality after heavy rain. The upriver option begins at the park and returns to the same launch point, while the downriver option leads to the dam and back, traversing a longer outward leg. Both routes allow paddling in either direction thanks to the gentle current.
Natural Setting and Wildlife
As you paddle along the banks you’ll pass century-old pecan trees from a historic orchard, creating a tree-lined corridor that enhances the peaceful feel of the trail. Wildlife is abundant here. Anglers will encounter largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish and bream. Bird-watchers may spot great blue herons, egrets, woodpeckers and winter visitors such as northern pintails and mallards. The combination of water, woodland and orchard adds to the variety of experiences on the trail.
Access and Practical Details
Fabis Primitive Park serves as the primary launch area for the trail. It lies about two miles from Brownwood on FM 2125 toward Lake Brownwood Dam. The park offers a boat ramp and fishing access, though campers should note that the facility is basic: no water or electricity at all sites. Given that the bayou is subject to changing flow and water quality conditions, it is wise to check recent weather and lake levels before setting out for your paddle.
