Pear Valley is an unincorporated community in northwestern McCulloch County, Texas. It lies along Farm Road 504, about sixteen miles northwest of Brady, the county seat. Although small, the settlement has maintained a continuous presence for more than a century, shaped by its agricultural roots and rural character.
Early History
The community began around 1908 under the name Saddle Creek, a scattered settlement that developed in the ranching and farming region of McCulloch County. When a post office was established in 1910, the settlement was renamed Pear Valley. The name change marked its recognition as a defined community, though its population remained small.
Population Trends
Pear Valley never grew large, but for decades it maintained a steady number of residents. According to records, the community’s population remained at 45 from the 1930s through the 1960s. By 1964, this figure had dropped to about 20 residents, reflecting the rural depopulation trends affecting many small Texas towns. Later census data shows a modest recovery, with 37 residents recorded in both 1990 and 2000.
Community Features
Though small, Pear Valley developed institutions typical of rural Texas communities. Historical maps from 1987 recorded two churches and two businesses in the settlement. Farming and ranching remained central to the area’s economy, and the community has continued to support agricultural activity.
One notable landmark is a stone church, documented in 1978 by the Texas Historical Commission’s Historic Resources Survey. This photograph provides rare visual evidence of Pear Valley’s historic architecture and confirms the presence of organized religious life in the community.
Present Status
Pear Valley remains inhabited, though on a very limited scale. Its population has stayed below fifty for decades, and it is often described as a quiet rural settlement. While the post office no longer operates, the community retains churches and agricultural structures that reflect its long history in McCulloch County.
