Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Trailway sits near the city of Mineral Wells in North Texas and covers more than 3,282 acres. The park opened on July 1, 1981 and includes the 640-acre Lake Mineral Wells. Its setting in the Western Cross Timbers gives the area a mix of woodlands, prairie openings, and lake views. Visitors come for camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, and horseback riding. The lake offers space for paddling and bank fishing, while the surrounding landscape supports a variety of wildlife commonly seen along the trails.
Penitentiary Hollow and Outdoor Recreation
One of the park’s most recognized features is Penitentiary Hollow. This rock formation includes tall, narrow sandstone walls and shaded passageways. It is one of the few natural rock-climbing locations in North Texas. Climbing here is top-rope only and must follow park guidelines, which helps protect the fragile rock structure. Beyond climbing, the park includes more than 11 miles of dedicated trails inside the boundary. These routes move through wooded hillsides and near shoreline areas, offering opportunities for birdwatching and nature viewing.
Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway
The Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway is a 20-mile rail-trail that follows the former Weatherford, Mineral Wells and Northwestern Railroad corridor. It stretches between Mineral Wells and Weatherford and offers a smooth, gentle grade suitable for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. The trailway passes through rolling countryside, wooded areas, and open fields. A signature element along the route is a 500-foot bridge decorated with 104 Lone Stars. This bridge provides wide views over the surrounding landscape, including a crossing above U.S. Highway 180.
Historical Background
Portions of the park and trailway sit on land once tied to Fort Wolters, a military installation active during the 20th century. Earlier, the region gained attention for its mineral springs, which helped Mineral Wells become a popular health resort destination in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The railroad line used by the trailway once transported visitors seeking the area’s mineral baths. Today, the park preserves this blend of natural character and local history while supporting a wide range of outdoor activities.
