Hippie Hollow Park sits along the scenic shores of Lake Travis, just northwest of Austin, Texas. Managed by Travis County Parks and located within the Texas Hill Country, it covers 109 acres of rugged, natural landscape. The park is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, steep rocky slopes, and clear blue waters that make it a striking outdoor destination. Though often called a beach, Hippie Hollow does not have sand. Instead, visitors find terraced rock ledges and natural stone steps leading down to the water.
Texas’ Only Clothing-Optional Public Park
Hippie Hollow holds the distinction of being the only legally recognized clothing-optional public park in Texas. Its status stems from Travis County’s management policies, which allow nude sunbathing and swimming within park boundaries. The area gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s when it became an informal gathering spot for those embracing personal freedom and social openness. In 1983, Travis County officially took over park operations through a lease from the Lower Colorado River Authority, giving the site its current designation and management structure.
A Longstanding Cultural Landmark
For decades, Hippie Hollow has drawn visitors seeking a relaxed and natural atmosphere away from the city. It continues to attract both locals and travelers who value privacy and acceptance in a peaceful lakeside setting. While early estimates suggested hundreds of thousands of annual visitors, recent county data indicates the park receives tens of thousands each year, reflecting consistent but moderate attendance.
Safety and Visitor Guidelines
Because of its rocky terrain and steep inclines, visitors are encouraged to use caution when walking or climbing near the water. Proper footwear and hydration are recommended, especially during the hot Texas summers. The park is limited to adults aged 18 and older, and rangers regularly monitor the area to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
A Place That Embodies Texas Individualism
Hippie Hollow Park is more than a place to swim or sunbathe—it represents a local expression of individuality and body freedom that has endured for generations. Set against the backdrop of the Hill Country’s limestone cliffs and blue waters, it stands as one of Austin’s most distinctive outdoor destinations.
