Frank Buck Zoo, located in Leonard Park in Gainesville, Texas, is a well-known family attraction with a rich history dating back to 1930. It began as part of the Gainesville Community Circus, a unique civic effort that brought townspeople together to create live animal performances for the community. After the circus era ended, the collection of animals evolved into a permanent zoo. In 1954, the facility was renamed to honor Gainesville native Frank Buck, a famed animal collector, author, and filmmaker who became internationally recognized for his “Bring ’Em Back Alive” expeditions.
A Close-Up Wildlife Experience
Today, Frank Buck Zoo covers approximately 30 acres within the park and is home to more than 130 animals from around the world. The layout encourages up-close and educational encounters for visitors of all ages. One of its most popular features is the elevated boardwalk that winds through the African Savanna habitat. From this vantage point, guests can observe giraffes, ostriches, and other species at eye level, offering an engaging perspective and excellent opportunities for photography.
Educational and Family-Friendly Programs
The zoo places strong emphasis on conservation and wildlife education. It offers programs for school groups, summer camps, and behind-the-scenes tours that teach visitors about animal care, behavior, and global biodiversity. Regular animal feedings and talks are scheduled throughout the week to give guests a chance to connect more deeply with the animals and their caretakers.
Recognition and Community Role
In 2020, Frank Buck Zoo earned the Exhibit Award of Excellence from the Zoological Association of America for its renovated prairie dog exhibit. This recognition reflects the zoo’s ongoing efforts to improve habitats and create enriching environments for both animals and visitors. Beyond its exhibits, the zoo serves as a community hub, hosting seasonal events, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities that strengthen Gainesville’s cultural and recreational life.
