Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, located near Glen Rose, Texas, is a nonprofit conservation facility spanning approximately 1,800 acres of the scenic Texas Hill Country. Established in 1984, the center serves as both a refuge for endangered and threatened species and an educational destination for visitors interested in wildlife preservation. More than 1,100 animals representing over 50 species roam its wide pastures, which are designed to resemble natural habitats as closely as possible. Guests can experience these environments through guided or self-guided driving tours that wind through the rolling countryside, offering close-up views of species from around the world.
Conservation and Breeding Programs
Since its founding, Fossil Rim has played an important role in wildlife conservation. It participates in more than two dozen cooperative breeding programs through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and other international initiatives. The center’s mission focuses on saving species from extinction through science-based management, habitat preservation, and public awareness. Educational programs, research collaborations, and conservation partnerships form the backbone of its daily operations.
Cheetah Breeding Success
One of Fossil Rim’s most recognized achievements is its cheetah breeding program. The center welcomed its first litter of cheetah cubs in 1986 and has since produced more than 200 cubs, ranking it among the most successful breeding facilities for the species in North America. These efforts help maintain a genetically diverse and stable cheetah population under managed care, contributing valuable data to global research on cheetah reproduction and behavior.
Reintroducing the Scimitar-Horned Oryx
Fossil Rim also contributes to the international recovery of the scimitar-horned oryx, a desert antelope that was once declared extinct in the wild. The center maintains a managed herd that provides animals for breeding and reintroduction programs. Fossil Rim’s animals were part of the larger conservation effort that successfully reintroduced the species to its native range in Chad. Today, the scimitar-horned oryx population in the wild is growing again, marking one of modern conservation’s most notable successes.
Protecting the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken
Closer to home, Fossil Rim participates in the recovery of the Attwater’s prairie chicken, one of North America’s most endangered birds. Through captive breeding and release programs, the center helps rebuild wild populations in Texas coastal grasslands where the species nearly disappeared. The project combines habitat management, predator control, and careful genetic monitoring to improve survival rates in reintroduced flocks.
Education and Visitor Experience
Fossil Rim’s mission extends beyond animal care. Its education programs engage students, families, and researchers with hands-on learning about ecology and conservation science. The wildlife drive and visitor center provide opportunities to connect with nature while supporting the organization’s broader mission. Each visit directly contributes to ongoing research, breeding programs, and animal care, making every guest part of the conservation effort.
