El Cosmico is a lodging and campground concept located just outside the town of Marfa, Texas, in West Texas. The establishment spans approximately 21 acres on the high plains, offering broad desert views and an open-sky atmosphere. The original site was designed as a place where guests can unwind in a relaxed, minimalist setting and connect with the rugged landscape of far West Texas.
Accommodation and Lodging Styles
The property features an eclectic set of accommodations including restored vintage trailers, safari-style tents, yurts, and tepees. These lodging options offer a blend of comfort and simplicity, tailored to travelers seeking a retreat that emphasizes the natural surroundings and a slower pace. The concept moves away from traditional luxury-hotel amenities and leans into a more authentic, remote-desert experience.
Cultural and Community Atmosphere
Beyond serving as a place to stay, the site has gained recognition as a community gathering spot. Its location in Marfa—an area noted for its artistic and cultural appeal—complements the spirit of the property, which encourages creativity, conversation, and unstructured downtime. The lodging hosts varied events, workshops, and social interactions, helping foster an atmosphere of ease and inspiration rather than formal hospitality.
Expansion and 3D Printing Innovation
El Cosmico is currently undergoing a major evolution. In partnership with ICON, a construction firm specializing in large-scale 3D printing, and the architecture team of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), a new version of the property is being developed on a site of more than 60 acres on the outskirts of Marfa. The expansion will feature 43 new hotel units and 18 private residential homes, all constructed using ICON’s 3D-printing system. The goal is to create what is described as the world’s first 3D-printed hotel and residence complex, incorporating domes, arches, and curving forms enabled by the printing technology. Construction on the project has already begun, and the development is expected to open around 2026.
Transition from the Original Site
As the new development progresses, the original 21-acre site is slated to close to public lodging on July 1, 2025. After that date, the focus will move to the new location, and parts of the original property will be repurposed for other uses, including affordable housing.
Why It Stands Out
El Cosmico offers a distinctive blend of desert lodging, creative community, and architectural innovation. It’s not a conventional resort; rather, it invites guests to slow down, engage with the West Texas environment, and participate—directly or indirectly—in a bold new chapter of hospitality design.
