Cooper Lake State Park’s Doctors Creek Unit sits on the northern side of Jim Chapman Lake in Delta County near the town of Cooper. The unit covers 466 acres and has more than six miles of shoreline. It is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and serves as a quiet getaway for visitors who enjoy time outdoors. The setting includes open water, hardwoods, and rolling terrain that supports a wide range of wildlife.
Natural Setting and Wildlife
The Doctors Creek Unit lies where the Tallgrass Prairie and Post Oak Savannah meet. This transition zone supports plant and animal species from both regions. Common wildlife sightings include gray foxes, nine banded armadillos, white tailed deer, raccoons, bobcats, and a variety of migratory and resident bird species. The mix of open habitat and wooded cover creates reliable opportunities for nature viewing throughout the year.
Lake Features and Recreation
Jim Chapman Lake covers 19,300 acres and was created through a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project that began in 1986. The dam and associated structures were completed and dedicated in 1991. The Doctors Creek shoreline gives visitors access to fishing, boating, paddling, and lakeside relaxation. Anglers frequently seek catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass. Inside the unit, visitors also use hiking trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds. Facilities include screened shelters, RV sites, tent sites, restrooms, and day use spaces.
Human History
Archeological evidence and regional history show that the area was once home to the Caddo people before European settlement. Farming and ranching arrived during the 1800s and shaped the surrounding communities for generations. When the lake project was approved in the twentieth century, the changed landscape created new habitat and helped form the parks that exist today. Texas Parks and Wildlife entered into a lease with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1991 to manage the two park units on the lake.
Visiting and Travel Notes
Before traveling, it is wise to confirm current conditions on official state park information sources. Weather, maintenance, and water levels can influence access and activities. Travelers should also be aware that State Highway 71 has a history of closing during periods of heavy rain, so checking road status with the Texas Department of Transportation is recommended. Additional access routes to the Doctors Creek Unit include FM 1529 and nearby county roads.
