The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) is a nonprofit organization located in Fort Worth, Texas. Established in 1987, BRIT is dedicated to the study, conservation, and appreciation of the plant world. It promotes understanding of plant diversity through research, education, and community engagement. BRIT operates as part of a public-private partnership with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, combining scientific expertise with public outreach to promote environmental stewardship.
One of the Nation’s Largest Herbaria
At the heart of BRIT is its world-class herbarium, which contains more than 1.5 million plant specimens. This makes it one of the ten largest herbaria in the United States and among the most significant botanical collections in the Southwest. The herbarium’s specimens, collected from around the world, serve as essential reference materials for plant identification, taxonomy, and conservation research. Alongside this collection, BRIT maintains a botanical library with more than 125,000 volumes, making it a major research resource for botanists, students, and educators.
Research, Education, and Global Impact
BRIT’s scientific research spans a wide range of topics, including taxonomy, ecology, biodiversity studies, and sustainable plant use. Its scientists collaborate with institutions worldwide to advance knowledge of plant life and contribute to conservation efforts. Education is a key part of BRIT’s mission, with programs that include workshops, lectures, and school partnerships designed to spark curiosity about the natural world. These initiatives encourage sustainable practices and build awareness of the importance of plants in everyday life.
A Partnership with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden
BRIT shares its campus and operations with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, creating a unique blend of scientific research and public engagement. Visitors can experience the beauty of the gardens, which include collections of native Texas flora and plants from around the globe. Together, BRIT and the Botanic Garden host community events, exhibitions, and volunteer programs that connect people with nature and promote conservation awareness.
Commitment to Sustainability and the Future
Sustainability is a cornerstone of BRIT’s philosophy. The institute’s award-winning headquarters, completed in 2011, is a LEED-certified building that incorporates green design features such as a living roof and energy-efficient systems. Through ongoing research, education, and outreach, BRIT continues to contribute to global efforts in biodiversity conservation and environmental education. Its work ensures that the understanding and preservation of plant life remain central to solving environmental challenges.
