Dinosaur Valley State Park: A Texas Landmark Where Ancient Footprints Shape an Unforgettable Visit

Dinosaur Valley State Park sits a few miles west of Glen Rose in Somervell County. The park opened to visitors in 1972 and covers more than fifteen hundred acres along the Paluxy River. It is best known for its Early Cretaceous dinosaur tracks preserved in the limestone riverbed. These tracks come from both sauropod and theropod dinosaurs and date to roughly one hundred thirteen million years ago. When river levels are low, visitors can see the footprints in several areas of the park.

Paleontological Significance

The dinosaur tracks belong to the Glen Rose Formation, a well-studied geological layer that preserves a clear record of ancient life. The sauropod tracks show large, rounded impressions that match long-necked, heavy-bodied herbivores. The theropod tracks are three-toed prints left by carnivorous dinosaurs that once roamed the region. The quality of the tracks contributed to the site’s designation as a National Natural Landmark in 1968, several years before the park officially opened. This recognition reflects the scientific value of the footprints and their importance in understanding dinosaur movement and behavior.

Trails, River Features, and Outdoor Activities

Dinosaur Valley State Park includes more than twenty miles of marked trails. These routes cross varied terrain and are open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Some trails follow ridgelines with wide views of the valley, while others trace the river’s edge. The Paluxy River is central to the park’s landscape. Conditions often change with rainfall, affecting which dinosaur track sites are visible and which trails can be accessed. One well-known spot along the river is the Blue Hole, a deeper pool that draws visitors during warm weather for wading and swimming.

The World’s Fair Dinosaurs

Two large fiberglass dinosaur sculptures stand near the park entrance. One represents a sauropod often referred to historically as a Brontosaurus or Apatosaurus. The other depicts a Tyrannosaurus. These models were originally created for the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair, later transported to Texas, and placed at what eventually became Dinosaur Valley State Park. They remain a recognizable feature and a nostalgic landmark for visitors.

Visitor Information and Conditions

Track visibility depends heavily on the Paluxy River’s water level. After rainfall, the river may cover the main track sites or make the riverbed slippery. During dry periods, several trackways become easy to view. Park staff frequently update conditions so that visitors have an accurate picture of what to expect. Trails, campsites, and day-use areas are well maintained, and reservations are recommended during busy seasons since the park is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the region.
