Balmorhea State Park sits in the wide-open landscape of West Texas and is known for one of the most remarkable natural features in the state. Officially designated as a Texas state park in 1968, it covers roughly 46 acres and is operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Its setting near the Davis Mountains places it in an otherwise dry environment, which makes its central feature even more striking.
The Spring-Fed Pool
The park is home to a large spring-fed swimming pool built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. Construction began in 1934 and continued into the early 1940s. The pool is supplied by San Solomon Springs, a reliable water source that releases an estimated 22 to 28 million gallons each day. Water temperatures typically stay between 72 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, creating consistent conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The pool covers about 1.3 acres and is known as one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Natural Features and Wildlife
San Solomon Springs also supports a restored desert wetland area. This cienega habitat provides a home for native fish species, aquatic plants, birds, turtles, and other wildlife adapted to life in the region. The wetland restoration project helps maintain biodiversity in an environment where natural water sources are scarce. Visitors often encounter wildlife close to the water, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
Recreation and Visitor Activities
Balmorhea State Park offers several types of outdoor recreation. Swimming and diving are the main attractions, with high water clarity and stable temperatures drawing visitors throughout the year. The park also supports activities such as camping, picnicking, bird watching, nature study, and geocaching. The combination of desert scenery and a constant-flow spring makes the park a popular stop for travelers in West Texas.
