The Fort Worth Zoo, established in 1909, is one of the oldest and most respected zoological parks in Texas. Located just a few miles from downtown Fort Worth, the zoo spans about 64 acres and is home to approximately 7,000 animals representing more than 500 species. It has earned national recognition for its focus on wildlife conservation, education, and recreation, offering experiences that connect visitors with nature and animal life from around the world.
Major Exhibits and Animal Habitats
The zoo features several major exhibits, including the World of Primates, African Savanna, and the Museum of Living Art (MOLA).
-
The World of Primates houses a variety of apes and monkeys, including bonobos, one of humanity’s closest relatives. The Fort Worth Zoo is among a small number of American zoos that care for bonobos, known for their intelligence and complex social behavior.
-
The African Savanna exhibit offers a walk-through experience featuring giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and rhinos. Elevated viewing decks allow visitors to see animals roaming through landscapes designed to mimic their native habitats.
-
The Museum of Living Art (MOLA) opened in 2010 and serves as a state-of-the-art herpetarium. It contains more than 5,000 reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates in naturalistic settings, highlighting the diversity of life beyond mammals and birds.
Conservation and Research
The Fort Worth Zoo is widely recognized for its commitment to conservation. Through the Arthur A. Seeligson Jr. Conservation Fund, it supports field research and recovery programs for species native to Texas, such as the Texas horned lizard, Houston toad, and Texas kangaroo rat. The zoo also participates in global conservation efforts, including partnerships with international organizations working to protect endangered species such as rhinos and elephants.
Notably, the zoo is one of only a few facilities worldwide that care for both southern black rhinos and greater one-horned (Indian) rhinos, emphasizing its leadership in species preservation. Its breeding programs and support of fieldwork contribute significantly to the survival of these threatened animals.
Education and Visitor Experience
Education is central to the Fort Worth Zoo’s mission. The zoo offers programs for children and adults, from summer camps and workshops to behind-the-scenes tours. These programs teach about animal behavior, ecosystems, and the importance of conservation in everyday life. Interactive exhibits and close-up animal encounters create memorable learning opportunities for visitors of all ages.
Guests can enjoy a full day exploring the zoo’s many habitats, shaded walkways, and feeding stations. Popular activities include feeding giraffes and attending animal keeper talks. Seasonal events and family-friendly attractions make it a year-round destination for both locals and tourists.
