The Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin, Texas, officially opened on June 17, 1967. It was founded by businessman Walter Trout, who envisioned a local zoo so children and families in East Texas would not always need to travel to Houston or Dallas to experience wildlife. The name of the zoo honors Mr. Trout’s mother, Ellen Trout. Early on, one of the first major animals was a hippopotamus named “Hippy” that arrived in late 1965 and prompted the construction of the initial hippo habitat; the zoo was then developed on land adjacent to a small lake on the north side of Lufkin.
Facility, Animal Collection and Conservation Focus
The zoo occupies approximately 15 acres according to widely cited sources, though other references indicate a range up to 20 acres. The animal population numbers around 700 individuals representing a broad array of species from around the world. The zoo participates in conservation initiatives such as Species Survival Plans for endangered animals. Exhibits include large species like Nile hippopotamuses, Masai giraffes, Malayan tigers and white rhinoceroses.
Educational Programming and Community Engagement
Education has been a key part of the zoo’s mission. Formal outreach programming began in 1977, including a “Wildlife on Wheels” initiative that brings animal-education presentations into classrooms covering topics such as endangered species, animal adaptations and rainforest ecosystems. The zoo also offers on-site workshops for teachers, university student internships, and summer programs such as a Junior Zookeeper track. In the community realm, the support organization Friends of Ellen Trout Zoo (F.O.E.T.Z.) operates as a non-profit partner and helps fund major expansion and renovation projects for the zoo.
Visitor Experience and Notable Features
Visitors to the Ellen Trout Zoo enjoy a compact, well-shaded walking route, with many exhibits designed for up-close viewing. A standout attraction is the hippo aquarium, which allows viewing of hippopotamuses above and below the waterline—a rare feature among U.S. zoos. The zoo welcomes approximately 150,000 visitors annually from across many states. Because of its size and layout, the zoo offers a family-friendly experience that is manageable in a few hours yet rich in wildlife variety.
Looking Ahead
Although modest in land area compared with some major zoological institutions, the Ellen Trout Zoo has established itself as a regional highlight of wildlife conservation, education and family recreation. Its evolution continues through planning for future expansions, enhanced exhibits and deepened educational programming—all grounded in its founding vision of bringing wildlife closer to the East Texas community.
