Rock Dove Cave is a limestone cavern located in northern San Antonio, within the Ridge at Lookout Canyon subdivision area of Bexar County. It was uncovered in January 2013 when construction crews working on a sewer line broke into a large underground void. The discovery quickly drew attention from local geologists and members of the Texas Speleological Association due to the cave’s remarkable condition and geological importance.
Geological Features
The cave extends approximately 450 feet in length and 90 feet in width, with ceiling heights reaching close to 40 feet in some chambers. Inside, visitors who initially entered reported impressive formations such as slender soda-straw stalactites up to 12 feet long, stalagmites rising around 15 feet, and flowstones in vivid shades of white, pink, red, and brown. These mineral features formed as groundwater dissolved and redeposited limestone over thousands of years. Experts have estimated that the cave may be anywhere from tens of thousands to roughly one million years old.
Significance to Local Geology
Rock Dove Cave lies within the Edwards limestone formation, which plays a vital role in the region’s aquifer system. The Edwards Aquifer is a key source of drinking water for San Antonio, and caves like Rock Dove are essential for understanding how water moves through the porous limestone. The discovery provided researchers with an opportunity to study how underground drainage networks evolve in the Hill Country and how natural formations preserve records of past water activity.
Preservation Efforts and Closure
After the cave’s discovery, McMillin Land Development, the property owner, took immediate steps to protect the site. Barriers and fencing were installed to restrict entry and prevent damage to the delicate formations. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the cave experienced some vandalism, leading to the breaking of fragile speleothems. To safeguard both the cave and nearby residential construction, the developer redesigned the subdivision plan so that no homes would be built directly above the void. Plans were later made to permanently seal the entrances to prevent further unauthorized access and to ensure long-term structural stability for the area above.
Scientific and Educational Interest
Rock Dove Cave became a point of interest among geologists, hydrologists, and speleologists. Its preserved chambers and active formations offered insight into the natural history of Bexar County’s karst terrain. Although sealed to the public, the cave remains an important part of the geological record for the San Antonio area, illustrating the ongoing processes that shape Texas’s underground landscapes.
