Natural Bridge Caverns lies in Comal County, Texas, just north of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. Its name comes from a natural limestone slab—approximately 60 feet in span—that forms a “bridge” at the cavern’s entrance. That exposed slab is the remnant of a sinkhole collapse, leaving the stone arching over the opening.
Discovery and Commercial Development
The caverns were first discovered on March 27, 1960, when four students from St. Mary’s University—Orion Knox, Al Brandt, Preston Knodell, and Joe Cantu—explored a small lead and uncovered a vast underground chamber system. Within a few years the owners of the property, the Wuest/Heidemann family, invested in developing the site. They opened the caverns to the public on July 3, 1964. In December 1967 the site was designated as a Texas State Historical Site, and in 1971 it received recognition as a U.S. National Natural Landmark.
Size, Features and Environment
Natural Bridge Caverns is regarded as the largest commercially operated cavern system in Texas. The temperature inside remains constant at roughly 21 °C (70 °F) year-round, with humidity levels reported around 99 percent. Visitors descend nearly two hundred feet below the surface into massive rooms, towering columns, flowstones, stalactites and stalagmites. The cave system is formed principally in the Glen Rose limestone (upper Cretaceous age) and the development of its speleothems is driven by water percolating through fractures and dissolving calcite over time.
Geology and Formation
This cavern system sits along the Balcones Fault Zone, a major tectonic feature of the Texas Hill Country. Faulting and jointing in the limestone provided pathways for groundwater to flow and carve cavities. Over long periods, the water deposited calcite to form speleothems: upward-growing stalagmites, ceiling-hanging stalactites, flowstone sheets and massive columns. The natural limestone bridge at the entrance marks the collapse of an upper chamber, leaving a stone span that now caps the amphitheater-style entrance.
Ongoing Exploration and Discoveries
Exploration at Natural Bridge Caverns continues. In May 2019 a caving team led by the Wuest family discovered more than 600 feet of previously unknown passage—described as the largest such find at the site in more than five decades. During a July 2019 expedition lasting about 19 hours, explorers uncovered additional large rooms and underground lakes. These finds confirm the cavern system remains actively mapped and studied.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The property’s commercial development reflects a bold commitment by a family to preserve and share the underground wonder. The site’s historical designations underscore its geological and cultural importance. The cavern has also provided archaeologists with artifacts and evidence of bat roosts dating thousands of years, indicating use by ancient peoples and animals. The long-term stewardship of the land and the cave system adds further value for education, science and public enjoyment.
