Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site sits along the Pedernales River in Stonewall, Texas, and highlights both the natural character of the Hill Country and the heritage of the nation’s 36th President. The property covers roughly 733 acres and was established in 1970 after land was donated by friends of President Johnson. It was created to honor his life and connection to the region. The landscape features rolling meadows, clusters of native trees, and seasonal wildflowers that reflect the environment Johnson grew up around.
Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm
A central feature of the park is the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, an operational farmstead representing rural Hill Country life around 1918. Staff work in period clothing and demonstrate chores exactly as they would have been done in the early twentieth century. Tasks may include cooking on a wood stove, tending livestock, preserving food, and using historic tools. The farm builds on the German-Texan traditions of the surrounding area and gives visitors an accurate sense of daily life during the World War I era.
Nature Trails and Wildlife
The park offers 1.2 miles of walking trails that pass through meadows often filled with native flowers, including bluebonnets during springtime. Wildlife viewing is part of the experience, with maintained herds of Texas Longhorns and American bison reflecting species important to the state’s history. The open terrain makes it easy to see these animals grazing in designated pasture areas.
Visitor Center and Interpretive Exhibits
The Visitor Center introduces guests to the life and legacy of Lyndon B. Johnson through exhibits focused on his upbringing, his political career, and his ties to the Texas Hill Country. The center also issues permits for a self-guided driving tour of the nearby LBJ Ranch. Although the ranch is part of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park rather than the state park, the Visitor Center serves as the starting point for accessing it.
Connection to Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park
A visit to the state park often pairs naturally with the LBJ Ranch, located just across the river. The driving tour includes important sites such as the reconstruction of Johnson’s birthplace, the one-room schoolhouse he attended, and the Johnson family cemetery where both Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson are buried. These locations offer insight into Johnson’s childhood and the environment that shaped many of his political values.
Historical Context and Purpose
The park’s creation reflects Johnson’s enduring relationship with the Texas Hill Country. Before the official opening in 1970, land was contributed in 1965 to help establish a state park that celebrated both local heritage and the life of a national leader. Today the site continues to preserve cultural history and natural landscapes while providing context for Johnson’s personal background, community ties, and early influences.
