Lake Colorado City State Park covers 500 acres in Mitchell County and sits along the shoreline of the 1,618-acre Lake Colorado City. The reservoir was created in 1949 as a cooling lake for a nearby power plant. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department secured the land through a long-term lease in 1971 and opened the park to the public in 1972. The setting combines open water, rolling terrain, and characteristic West Texas vegetation shaped by decades of natural change and land management.
Recreation on the Water
The lake supports year-round activities. Visitors can swim, paddle, or fish from the shore, the fishing pier, or a boat launched from the designated ramp. Largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish are the primary sport fish found in the reservoir. Kayak rentals are available at the park and include paddles and life vests. Because this is a Texas state park, guests fishing from the bank or pier do not need a fishing license. Water levels and fishing conditions can shift at times due to seasonal golden alga blooms, which are most common from November through April and occasionally affect fish populations.
Trails and Wildlife
The park features a one-mile hiking trail that follows the lakeshore and offers easy access to scenic viewpoints. Wildlife is abundant, and more than 300 bird species have been recorded within the park boundaries. The mixture of lake habitat, brushland, and prairie remnants provides reliable opportunities for birding, photography, and casual wildlife observation.
Natural Setting and Habitat
The land surrounding Lake Colorado City was once dominated by prairie grasses. Over time, mesquite became the primary plant across much of the park. Prickly pear and other desert-adapted species add to the region’s distinctive character. Resource managers continue to use prescribed burns and other techniques to improve grassland conditions and support native ecosystems.
Camping and Overnight Stays
Visitors can choose from campsites with water or water-and-electric hookups. The park also offers cabins located near restroom and shower facilities. These options make it possible to plan anything from a quiet overnight stay to a comfortable weekend near the lake.
