Lake Casa Blanca International State Park sits on the eastern side of Laredo, Texas, near the U.S.–Mexico border. The park covers about 525 acres of land surrounding the 1,680-acre Lake Casa Blanca. Before becoming a Texas state park, the land and reservoir were managed by Webb County and the City of Laredo. The area was officially designated and opened as a state park in 1991.
Recreational Activities and Amenities
Visitors have access to many outdoor activities on both land and water. The lake supports boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing. Anglers regularly pursue largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, crappie and catfish. A fishing pier and a concrete boat ramp make the lake accessible for beginners and experienced visitors alike, and the park offers loaner fishing gear. On land, several miles of trails provide space for hiking and mountain biking. These trails range from lakeside paths to higher points with open views of the reservoir. Additional amenities include picnic areas, playgrounds, sports courts and a campground with water, electric and selected sewer hookup sites.
Natural Environment and Wildlife
The park lies within the South Texas Brush Country, known for mesquite, guajillo and various cactus species, including prickly pear. The habitat supports white-tailed deer, black-tailed jackrabbits and other mammals. Birdwatchers often spot vermilion flycatchers, greater roadrunners and a wide range of other resident and seasonal species. Aquatic vegetation and shoreline features such as cattails, submerged timber and rip-rap provide structure for fish and contribute to the lake’s healthy ecosystem.
Geological and Historical Significance
Much of the park’s geology belongs to the Laredo Formation, composed of sandstone and mudstone laid down during the Eocene Epoch, roughly 38 to 54 million years ago. Archaeological findings in the surrounding region show that indigenous peoples and later Spanish explorers passed through the area long before it became a park. The long geological timeline and historic human presence add context to the landscape visitors see today.
Why This Park Stands Out
Lake Casa Blanca International State Park combines convenient access with a broad range of outdoor opportunities. Its location within city limits makes it easy for families and travelers to reach, while its lake, trails and wildlife offer a full outdoor experience. Whether visitors come for a day on the water, a walk through brushland habitat or simply a scenic place to relax, the park provides a dependable and inviting setting.
