Indian Lodge sits inside Davis Mountains State Park in far West Texas. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the original portion of the lodge in the 1930s, and it first opened to guests in 1935. The structure was designed with white adobe-style walls and a multilevel layout inspired by pueblo village forms. This approach gave the lodge a striking appearance that still stands out in the rugged, volcanic landscape of the Davis Mountains. A major expansion in the 1960s added additional guest rooms, and the entire property continues to reflect a blend of historic craftsmanship and practical design suited for the region’s climate.
Architecture and Facilities
The lodge’s exterior and interior highlight adobe construction methods used during the early twentieth century. Thick walls help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, and the stepped, stacked profile follows traditional pueblo-style cues. Today the lodge offers 39 guest rooms, along with a meeting room used for gatherings and small events. Guests have access to an outdoor swimming pool, shaded courtyards, and patios that overlook the surrounding mountain terrain. The Black Bear Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch during regular operating periods, providing a convenient on-site dining option for visitors.
Recent Renovations
A major renovation project was completed in 2025, focusing on updating guest rooms, improving infrastructure, and increasing accessibility. The work included repairs to the historic 1930s section as well as upgrades throughout the later additions. The intent of the project was to preserve the lodge’s original character while modernizing essential features. After construction concluded, the lodge reopened to public reservations with refreshed interiors, improved guest comfort, and restored architectural details.
Outdoor Access and Activities
Indian Lodge sits within walking distance of several trailheads inside Davis Mountains State Park. The park is known for its clear night skies, varied birdlife, and scenic routes that lead through desert grasslands, canyons, and higher-elevation woodlands. Visitors can hike, watch wildlife, or join ranger-led programs that highlight the area’s natural and cultural history. Because the lodge is located within one of the state’s most remote and elevated parks, it offers an unusually quiet environment for stargazing and nature-focused travel.
