Choke Canyon State Park is located near Calliham in south Texas, positioned between San Antonio and Corpus Christi along the shoreline of the Choke Canyon Reservoir. The reservoir covers roughly 26,000 acres and supports a wide range of outdoor activities. The park provides camping, boating, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, and group recreation facilities. It is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Park Structure and Units
The park is composed of two main units.
The Calliham Unit offers overnight accommodations, including campsites with water and electricity, walk-in tent sites, screened shelters, cabins, and group-camp facilities. This unit includes boat ramps, fish-cleaning stations, picnic areas, trails, and a sports complex with a gymnasium, basketball court, tennis court, and softball field.
The South Shore Unit serves as a day-use area. It supports activities such as boating, fishing, and bird-watching but does not provide full overnight camping. It maintains boat access and shoreline fishing areas but has fewer built facilities compared to the Calliham Unit.
Recreation, Fishing, and Wildlife
Choke Canyon Reservoir is known regionally for its fishing, especially for largemouth bass and catfish. Visitors also encounter a varied wildlife population that includes white-tailed deer, javelina, wild turkey, and American alligators along the reservoir’s edges.
The park is a favored destination for bird-watchers because it sits within a transition zone where species from northern Mexico and southern Texas overlap. Migratory birds use the reservoir and surrounding brush country habitat as a seasonal stopover.
Natural History and Archaeology
Archaeological studies of the greater Choke Canyon area show human activity stretching back more than 10,000 years. Findings include evidence of Paleo-Indian hunting and gathering camps and later Archaic-period sites. The environment reflects the South Texas Plains region, marked by semiarid conditions and vegetation such as mesquite, blackbrush, prickly pear, and other drought-tolerant species.
Visitor Tips and Park Management
Choke Canyon State Park is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Visitors are encouraged to bring sufficient water, sun protection, and appropriate footwear, as the terrain can be hot and dry. Awareness of wildlife, including alligators near the water, is important. The park allows various water-based activities in designated zones, and some shoreline fishing areas may not require a separate fishing license when used within park boundaries under current state park fishing regulations.
