Spurlin was a small ranching and farming community in northwestern Hamilton County, Texas. It was established in the early 20th century along the Stephenville North & South Texas Railway, which was completed through the area in 1907–1908. The settlement lay about four miles southeast of Carlton and was tied closely to the surrounding agricultural economy.
The townsite was officially promoted in November 1908 with a depot auction. On November 21, 1908, lots were sold at public sale in front of the Spurlin Depot. To encourage attendance, special trains were run from Stephenville and Hamilton, and advertisements highlighted the settlement as a promising new community along the railway. These early efforts reflected optimism that the railroad would spur population growth and commercial activity.
Community Development
By the mid-1930s, Spurlin contained a church, a business, and scattered residences serving local ranchers and farmers. It relied on the nearby town of Carlton for mail service, underscoring its small scale and dependence on neighboring communities.
The railway depot functioned as the central feature of Spurlin, handling freight and passengers. However, the community never grew into a large town. Its role was primarily to serve the surrounding rural population and ranching families.
Decline and Disappearance
As automobile ownership spread and highways replaced railroads as the main form of transportation, Spurlin began to decline. Passenger and freight traffic on the Stephenville North & South Texas Railway dwindled, and rural depopulation trends further reduced its viability.
By the late 1980s, Spurlin had disappeared from standard Texas maps. Today it is classified as a ghost town in Hamilton County.
Remnants
The most visible trace of Spurlin is the partial remains of its brick school building, long abandoned and in disrepair. The school’s crumbling walls stand as one of the only reminders of the community’s brief existence. Aside from this structure, little evidence remains on the ground of the once-promoted railroad settlement.
