Poesta is a small rural community in Bee County, Texas, situated about three miles southeast of Beeville along State Highway 202. The area was settled around 1890, during a period when Bee County was seeing an increase in small farming and ranching settlements. At first the settlement was known as Hatcher’s, likely after a local family, before taking the name Poesta, borrowed from Poesta Creek, a stream that runs nearby and provided water for settlers and their livestock.
Growth of a Community
Like many rural Texas settlements, Poesta developed around its school, which quickly became the center of local life. By 1894, Poesta already had a functioning public school. In 1899, records show the school had one teacher and 17 students. Enrollment grew modestly, with 23 students by 1906. A new schoolhouse was built in 1915, reflecting the stability of the community and the importance placed on education.
Schools in communities like Poesta often served more than educational purposes. They were gathering spots for families, hosted community events, and gave the area a sense of shared identity. Though small in size, Poesta was connected through its school to the broader pattern of settlement across rural Bee County.
Decline Linked to Chase Field
By the late 1930s, Poesta was still functioning, though modestly. In 1939, it was described as a community with its school and scattered dwellings. The school operated until 1943, when construction of the Chase Field Naval Auxiliary Air Station forced its relocation to a site east of its original grounds. This disruption marked the beginning of Poesta’s decline. Without a school, the community lost its primary anchor, and its residents increasingly relied on nearby Beeville for services, employment, and commerce.
Present Status
Today, Poesta no longer exists as a distinct town. Instead, the area contains scattered residences, and there is no recognizable town center or business activity. Because of this, some sources list Poesta among Texas “ghost towns.” However, unlike fully abandoned ghost towns, the area remains lightly inhabited, blending into the rural landscape southeast of Beeville.
Historical Significance
Although it never grew into a large town, Poesta illustrates the history of rural communities in South Texas. Many such settlements sprang up in the late 19th century, tied to farming, ranching, and local water sources. Their schools acted as the heart of the community. When those schools closed, often due to economic shifts or outside developments like the creation of military installations, the communities typically faded.
Poesta’s story, from its founding as Hatcher’s in 1890, through the establishment of its school, to its decline in the 1940s, reflects these broader trends. Its legacy survives through its association with Poesta Creek, its role in the early settlement of Bee County, and the memories preserved in county history.
