The Mast Arboretum is a ten-acre botanical garden located on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) in Nacogdoches, Texas. Established in 1985 as a class project for SFA’s first landscape plant materials course, the Arboretum has evolved into one of the university’s most important teaching and research facilities. It is part of the larger SFA Gardens, a collection of six themed garden areas that together cover about 138 acres.
History and Development
What began as a small student project near the Agriculture Building has grown into a thriving living laboratory and public garden. The Arboretum was named in honor of the Mast family, whose contributions supported the garden’s continued growth. Under the leadership of Dr. David Creech, director of SFA Gardens, the Arboretum expanded from a modest quarter-acre teaching plot to a recognized regional resource for education, horticulture, and conservation.
Plant Collections and Features
Today, the Mast Arboretum houses more than 7,500 plant species, representing both native Texas flora and ornamental plants from around the world. Its collections include azaleas, camellias, conifers, ornamental grasses, and numerous other species adapted to the East Texas climate. The landscape features a variety of themed areas and display gardens, each designed to demonstrate unique horticultural concepts and plant groupings. Sculptures and art pieces created by local artists are also placed throughout the grounds, blending artistic expression with the natural setting.
Educational and Research Role
As part of SFA Gardens, the Mast Arboretum serves as a living classroom for students studying horticulture, forestry, and environmental science. It provides opportunities for hands-on learning in plant propagation, landscape management, and conservation practices. Faculty and students use the space for experiments on plant adaptability, climate tolerance, and sustainable landscaping techniques.
Community and Outreach
Beyond its academic functions, the Arboretum plays an important role in community engagement. It hosts annual plant sales, lectures, and educational workshops that attract visitors from across East Texas. These events not only support SFA’s educational mission but also promote environmental awareness and gardening interest among the public. Families, garden enthusiasts, and researchers alike visit the Arboretum to learn, relax, and connect with nature in a serene setting.
Part of a Larger Vision
The Mast Arboretum is one component of the broader SFA Gardens, which include the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden, the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, and several specialized collections. Together, these gardens cover 138 acres of cultivated and natural spaces, forming one of the most significant university-based botanical collections in the southern United States. The Mast Arboretum continues to embody the university’s commitment to education, research, and community service through the beauty and diversity of its living plant collections.
