Pelican Island is located in Galveston County, Texas, just north of Galveston Island. Connected to the city of Galveston by the Pelican Island Causeway, it sits within the waters of Galveston Bay. Once an undeveloped stretch of marshland, the island has evolved into a mix of educational, industrial, and recreational areas while retaining sections of natural habitat along its coastline.
History and Development
The island’s transformation began in the mid-20th century when dredged materials from the Houston Ship Channel were used to expand its land area. Over time, Pelican Island became home to several important facilities. Texas A&M University at Galveston established its campus there, specializing in marine and maritime studies. The Galveston Naval Museum also operates on the island, featuring historic vessels such as the USS Stewart and the USS Cavalla, both open to visitors.
The surrounding waters remain active with shipping and fishing, while parts of the shoreline support wildlife typical of Texas coastal ecosystems. Though development has changed much of its landscape, Pelican Island continues to play a role in environmental education and coastal research.
Wildlife and Environment
Pelican Island’s marshes and tidal flats attract a variety of bird species common to the Gulf Coast, including herons, egrets, pelicans, and gulls. While it is not a designated wildlife refuge like the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, the area provides valuable feeding and resting grounds for migratory birds. Portions of the coastline also serve as study sites for students and researchers examining marine life, wetland ecology, and coastal preservation.
Accessibility and Recreation
Pelican Island is easily accessible by car via the causeway bridge from Galveston. The island offers visitors several points of interest, from the naval museum and university campus to public fishing spots along the shore. Though largely functional and educational in nature, the island provides a quieter setting compared to Galveston’s beaches, appealing to those interested in maritime history and local wildlife.
