The Capital of Texas Zoo is a family-oriented wildlife park located in Cedar Creek, about 20 minutes east of downtown Austin. Situated in a peaceful rural setting, the zoo provides a close-up look at more than 500 animals from around the world. It’s a smaller, more intimate alternative to larger urban zoos, giving visitors a chance to observe exotic and endangered species up close in a relaxed environment.
Wildlife and Conservation
The zoo’s mission centers on education and conservation. It is home to a variety of species, including primates, reptiles, big cats, and birds, and actively participates in breeding programs for fourteen endangered species. These conservation efforts reflect the zoo’s ongoing commitment to preserving wildlife and raising awareness about the importance of protecting animal habitats.
Visitor Experiences
Guests can expect hands-on and interactive experiences throughout their visit. One of the zoo’s most well-known residents is Tank, a 4,000-pound hippopotamus that draws plenty of attention from visitors. On Saturday evenings from March through November, the zoo hosts its “Zoonites” program—guided nighttime tours that allow guests to witness the nocturnal side of the zoo. During these tours, visitors can hear lions roaring, peacocks calling, and other animals settling in for the night.
Programs and Events
The Capital of Texas Zoo offers educational opportunities such as the Junior Keeper Program, where participants aged 13 and up can assist with daily animal care under staff supervision. The zoo also hosts various seasonal events throughout the year aimed at families and children, designed to foster curiosity and appreciation for wildlife.
