The Austin Zoo, located on Rawhide Trail in southwest Austin, Texas, is a non-profit rescue zoo dedicated to helping animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation, and education. Nestled within approximately 15 to 16 acres of scenic Texas Hill Country landscape, the zoo provides a safe and enriching home for animals that have been retired from laboratories, rescued from neglectful environments, or surrendered by private owners. It operates under the mission of offering lifelong care and promoting awareness about wildlife conservation.
From Ranch to Rescue
The Austin Zoo began its journey in 1990 as the Good Day Ranch, a small facility that initially cared for domesticated animals like goats and pigs. Over time, as more exotic and displaced animals arrived, the focus shifted from a simple ranch to a sanctuary setting. In 1994, the facility officially adopted the name Austin Zoo. By transitioning into a non-profit organization, it expanded its capacity to provide care for a wider variety of animals and to strengthen its educational outreach programs for the public.
A Home to Hundreds of Animals
Today, the zoo is home to more than 300 animals representing over 100 species. The residents include African lions, Bengal tigers, cougars, black bears, monkeys, lemurs, reptiles, and birds. Each animal has a unique rescue story, and the zoo emphasizes creating habitats that allow them to live comfortably and safely. Unlike traditional zoos that focus on animal breeding or exhibitions, the Austin Zoo’s primary goal is to give rescued animals a permanent and caring home.
Education and Visitor Experience
Education plays a central role in the zoo’s mission. Visitors can take part in zookeeper talks, educational programs, and interactive experiences that encourage respect for wildlife. A popular attraction is the Hoofstock Feeding Area, where guests can safely feed friendly animals such as goats, llamas, and deer. Families often enjoy the zoo’s shaded picnic areas, playground, and a miniature train ride that winds through the picturesque Hill Country, offering a relaxing way to view the surrounding landscape.
Commitment to Animal Welfare
The Austin Zoo is accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA), recognizing its adherence to high standards of animal care and ethical management. The accreditation reflects the zoo’s dedication to providing safe habitats, quality veterinary care, and educational opportunities that highlight the importance of responsible wildlife stewardship. Through ongoing public support and volunteer participation, the Austin Zoo continues to serve as a sanctuary and learning environment for visitors of all ages.
