The Center for Animal Research & Education (CARE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) sanctuary located in Bridgeport, Texas. Founded by Heidi Krahn, the organization officially became a non-profit in 2003 with a mission to provide a safe, permanent home for rescued exotic animals. CARE focuses on animal welfare, education, and advocacy, creating a space where people can learn about wildlife conservation and the challenges faced by animals in captivity.
A Safe Haven for Big Cats and More
CARE spans 20 acres of land in Wise County and is home to a variety of exotic species. The sanctuary provides lifelong care for more than 60 animals, including lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ring-tailed lemurs, and even a llama and a tortoise. Each animal has been rescued from situations involving neglect, abandonment, or the exotic pet trade. The organization’s approach centers on ensuring the animals’ physical health and emotional well-being through spacious enclosures, enrichment activities, and professional veterinary care.
Education and Community Engagement
Beyond animal care, education is a major part of CARE’s mission. The organization offers guided tours where visitors can observe the animals and learn about their backgrounds, natural behaviors, and conservation issues. CARE also hosts school groups and community programs to encourage responsible attitudes toward wildlife and environmental stewardship. These programs aim to help the public understand how human actions affect both captive and wild animal populations.
The Safari Suites Experience
One of CARE’s most distinctive offerings is its Safari Suites, which provide guests with the opportunity to stay overnight on the property. These unique accommodations allow visitors to experience the sights and sounds of the sanctuary after hours in a comfortable, serene setting. The experience helps support CARE’s operations, with proceeds going toward food, medical care, and habitat maintenance for the animals.
Volunteer and Support Programs
CARE operates largely through the dedication of volunteers and donor support. Volunteers assist with feeding, maintenance, animal enrichment, and educational outreach. The organization emphasizes transparency and community involvement, maintaining strong ties with supporters who share a passion for animal welfare. Donations and sponsorships directly contribute to the daily care of the sanctuary’s residents, many of whom require specialized diets and medical attention.
Advocacy for Animal Welfare
CARE stands as a strong advocate for ethical treatment and responsible ownership of exotic animals. Through its educational efforts and public engagement, the organization works to raise awareness about the dangers of wildlife trafficking, improper breeding, and the challenges of keeping wild animals in private ownership. Its long-term goal is to inspire positive change in how society views and interacts with exotic species.
